Understanding the differences between CVT, DCT, and regular AT

Owning a car is undoubtedly one of the most satisfying experiences in life A vehicle gives you the freedom to go anywhere and do anything, all you have to do is pass a test.

However, your enjoyment can quickly end when you find a fault with your vehicle. Suddenly you’ll find yourself at the garage listening to a lot of unrecognizable terms.

CVT

CVT stands for Continual Variable Transmission. The transmission is your gearbox, that’s responsible for moving the power from the energy to the wheels. The more efficient this transference of power is the better the responsiveness when you drive and more economical the vehicle can be.

Continual Variable Transmission

CVT is essentially a type of automatic box. A belt rotates between two pulleys, the diameter of the pulleys alters according to the engine management system. When it alters it changes the ratio of the gears, creating more or less torque as required.

Because it is a continual process there is no sudden change between gears, the CVT should allow a smooth change between gears as you drive, allowing you to focus on the road without even noticing the gears changing.

DCT

DCT equates to Dual Clutch Transmission. This is another type of automatic box. Instead of a constant movement of pulleys to change gear ratio, the double-clutch transmission system works similarly to a clutch, but without your input.

Dual Clutch Transmission

In effect, the car is taken out of gear by releasing the cogs in the gearbox. It is then put into a new gear by repeating the process. What may surprise you is that the double-clutch mechanism takes less than one-tenth of a second. In short, you won’t notice it when you’re driving. It will feel as smooth as the CVT system.

The main difference between CVT and DCT is the type of vehicle these systems are used in. CVT is a cheaper option and mass-produced, making it perfectly suited for the average vehicle. However, as soon as you enter the performance car market you’ll want the higher premium, potentially more durable DCT system. This is designed for use in high-performance vehicles.

Regular AT

Regular AT or regular automatic transmission is the third main option for automatic vehicles. This is potentially the most complex of the three systems, which means it will be the most costly to repair if you have an issue with it.

Regular AT is aimed at low-performance cars and is better able to cope with higher speeds than CVT. This is one of the reasons it remains the most popular option for mass-produced cars, the CT, thanks to its limited ability to handle speed, is better suited to electric and gas-powered cars.

However, while the AT works in a similar way to the CVT, it doesn’t have variable pulleys, the configuration of gears and when to change are established by the manufacturer and set. This generally increases the likelihood of feeling gear shift and may frustrate you when you need more power.
